Parcel UPS Shipping Charge Corrections

It’s important to enter accurate shipment details when you create a shipment. Otherwise, you could face additional correction charges coming from UPS after delivery or first billing.

Here are some of the charges you might see after delivery/first billing: 

  1. Shipping Charge Correction Ground: Incorrect Weight shipping charge corrections occur when the weight of a package is different than the weight indicated at the time of shipping.
    To avoid Incorrect Weight shipping charge corrections, use any standard scale and round up any fraction of a pound to the next full pound when entering the package weight in your shipping system.

  1. Shipping Charge Correction Large Package Surcharge - Length + Girth: UPS has established specific weight and size limits for the packages sent through our small package delivery network. The limits below only pertain to individual packages. There are no limits to the total weight of your shipment or the total number of packages in your shipment.
    1. For domestic shipments, a package is considered a "Large Package" when its length (longest side of the package) plus girth [(2 x width) + (2 x height)] combined exceeds 130 inches or its length exceeds 96 inches.
    2. For international shipments, a package is considered a "Large Package" when its length (longest side of the package) plus girth [(2 x width) + (2 x height)] combined exceeds 130 inches.
    3. With the exception of UPS Ground with Freight Pricing packages, Large Packages are subject to a minimum billable weight of 90 pounds (40 kgs).
  2. To see the charges billed with the original freight charges enter the packages dimensions at the time of shipping.

  1. Over Maximum Size: UPS has established specific weight and size limits for the packages sent through our small package delivery network. The limits below only pertain to individual packages. There are no limits to the total weight of your shipment or the total number of packages in your shipment.
    1. Packages can be up to 150 pounds.
    2. Packages can be up to 165 inches in length and girth combined.
    3. Packages can be up to 108 inches in length.
    4. Packages with a large size-to-weight ratio require special pricing and dimensional weight calculations.
  2. These limits apply to most packages and destinations, but there are some variances because of different local restrictions in some countries. Packages that exceed UPS weight and size limits above are subject to an Over Maximum Limits charge.


  3. Residential Surcharge / Residential Adjustment: A surcharge will apply (in addition to all applicable Area Surcharges) to any delivery AND/OR Pickup request from, a location that is a home, including a business operating out of a home.

  1. Additional Handling: An Additional Handling charge may apply if your shipment requires special handling as stated in our UPS Terms and Conditions of Service/Carriage. Those criteria include:
    1. A package with the longest side exceeding 48 inches or second-longest side exceeding 30 inches.
    2. A shipment where the average weight per package is greater than 50 pounds or packages over 50 pounds with the weight not specified on the source document or the UPS automated shipping system used.
    3. A package that is not fully encased in corrugated cardboard. Any cylindrical-like item, such as a barrel, drum, pail or tire, that is not fully encased in a corrugated cardboard shipping container.

  1. Delivery Area Surcharge: A surcharge applies to each package delivered to certain ZIP CodesTM within the 48 contiguous states. For Alaska and Hawaii, refer to the Remote Area Surcharge.

  2. Delivery Area Surcharge - Extended: An Extended Area Surcharge applies to shipments for some international origins and destinations.
    Visit ups.com/rates or call 1-800-782-7892 to determine if a particular origin or destination is classified as an Extended Area.
